 Dr. Philip Vassallo, a member of the International Society for General Semantics since 1989, has throughout his professional career been an active student of General Semantics. Problems posed by language have been the focus of many of his essays, plays and poems, 27 of which have appeared in ETC: A Review of General Semantics. Dr. Vassallo and colleagues will read from his selected nonfiction, drama and poetry to muse on how language presents communication barriers that undermine positive action, or creates pathways that facilitate mutual understanding.

 Dr. Vassallo, an independent communications consultant, has developed, delivered, and supervised communication training programs for a wide range of administrative and technical professionals in corporate, government, and academic environments since 1984. In addition, he has taught writing for Cornell University, Rutgers University, Kent University, and Middlesex County College. Dr. Vassallo has evaluated writing and speaking skills for the Educational Testing Service and has provided writing, coaching and assessment services for numerous corporate employees, including non-native speakers. He is author of On the Job Writing, published by ISGS; The Inwardness of the Outward Gaze: Learning and Teaching through Philosophy; Words on the Line, a column on effective writing for ETC.; and The Learning Class, a column on education issues for EducationNews.org. He has written two studies on the school choice movement, published poetry and essays to numerous literary and educational publications, and contributed to several books. Nine of his short plays have been produced in New York City and elsewhere. He and film maker Kristian Fraga have adapted his award – winning play, The Spelling Bee, for production this year.

 Dr. Vassallo holds a B.A. in English from Baruch College, an M. S. in education from Lehman College, and a doctorate in educational theory from Rutgers University. He has appeared on television and radio supporting education.

His many articles in ETC. include

 “Dialogue: Speaking to Listen, Listening to Speak”;
 “Beware the Seven Deadly Sins of Tone”;
 “Persuading Powerfully: Tips for Writing Persuasive Documents”;
 “Admissions Essays with a Focus on Getting in”; and
 “U-Mail, I-Mail – More Effective Business E-Mail.”

Dr. Vassallo’s presentation will give us a learning opportunity for improving our communication skills.

 Dr. Lawrence LeShan pioneered in researching mind / body / spirit inter-relationships and developed models of psychic healing.  With Joyce Goodrich, he helped form the Consciousness Research and Training Project, with seminars and continued research.

 Acknowledging being tremendously lucky in the teachers he has had, Dr. LeShan includes Alfred Korzybski, with whom he had seminars in the 1940’s, in Lakeville, Connecticut.  In an interactive dialogue, Dr. LeShan will share with us how General Semantics influenced his work throughout his professional life.

We are fortunate to have Dr. LeShan share his wide ranging experiences in health and healing.

 Other books by Dr. LeShan include Alternate Realities: The Search for the Full Human Being; How to Meditate;  Einstein’s Space and Van Gogh’s Sky: Physical Reality and Beyond (with Henry Margenau); Beyond Technique: Psychotherapy for the 21st Century; An Ethic for the Age of Space: A Touchstone for Conduct Among the Stars; and The Psychology of War: Comprehending its Mystique and its Madness.

Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man to walk on the moon, founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences in 1973 to study mind, consciousness, and ways of knowing. Members in New York City founded FIONS in 1988 to collaborate with IONS and explore the many ways “consciousness” governs every aspect of life.  FIONS offers its members, and the public, talks, workshops, courses and informal discussion groups to bring together science and spirit through dialogue and practice.
